About the company:

At Mowi, we work with the ocean to produce nutritious, delicious and supreme-quality seafood. We fulfill one fifth of global demand for farm-raised Atlantic salmon and are constantly driven by innovation and the desire to achieve the highest standards of sustainability.
In Canada, we operate salmon farms on the coast of beautiful British Columbia and Vancouver Island, where over 300 people produce about 23,000 tonnes of sustainable farm-raised Atlantic salmon each year.

Our salmon are four-star certified to the Global Aquaculture Alliance Best Aquaculture Practices.

The many phases of Mowi’s fish farming business in British Columbia are located in or near a number of coastal communities. Campbell River, located at the mid-point of the east coast of Vancouver Island, is home to Mowi Canada West’s main office. Known as “The Salmon Capital of the World”, Campbell River is home to many resource industries including tourism, mining and forestry.

Port Hardy and Port McNeill, at the northern tip of Vancouver Island, are home to about 200 Mowi employees.

Klemtu, on the mainland central coast, is home to the Kitasoo/Xai’xais people and Kitasoo Seafoods. This joint venture between the Kitasoo and Mowi has helped make fish farming a part of the community.

Describe the project.:

Mowi Canada West is part of a $2.9M Ocean Supercluster Project called ‘Enhancing Aquaculture Productivity with Environmental Genomics’. This project is using state-of-the-art genetic technology to assess the environment more thoroughly than ever possible before. The goal is to expand out understanding of what is happening in the ocean and how changing conditions may affect our fish.
